No. 1 Job Skill in 10 Years Predicted by Mark Cuban


It goes without saying that jobs have become a main focus of our economy and the politics that go along with that.  One issue that has been brought to light recently is that one of the large concerns with jobs in the country won't be the outsourcing of them, but rather the automation of them.  It's already begun to take place in fast food places like Wendy's, but in a recent interview that Dallas Mavericks billionaire owner did with Bloomberg TV, he feels that the U.S. is woefully unprepared.  

Computer coding, once thought to be a fail safe occupation, could soon even become in jeopardy.

"That might have been a great job a few years ago, but 

you might be out of work in five years," he mentions, claiming that the "automation of automation," where computers might soon learn to write better software than humans can.  "We're going to have a lot of displaced workers - the nature of work is changing," says Cuban.

So what does he predict will become the most in demand job skill to combat these forms of automation?  
Creative thinking.  

"I personally think there's going to be a greater demand in 10 years for liberal arts majors than there were for programming majors and maybe even engineering," he said.  "When the data is all being spit out for you, options are being spit out for you, you need a different perspective in order to have a different view of the data."

Cuban claims that experts in foreign language or philosophy majors will be of the most value to employers over the next decade.  

Interestingly amidst much criticism over the current administration's budget, he goes on to say that America should be more heavily investing in programs like Americorps, which is seen to leverage community building and develop creative thinking for further social impact.  

Whether or not Cuban's prediction comes true will remain to be seen of course, but perhaps all of a sudden that degree you thought may not have been quite so handy, could indeed become just the opposite.
