T-Mobile Introducing New Technology to Help Protect Consumers Against Robocalls

A picture of Will Forte as Robocall

There's the saying about different things in life being certain, usually death and taxes, but one we can all probably relate to is getting ready to sit down, have dinner with your family, and then your phone rings with some unknown robocall.  Sometimes the calls are constant, sometimes a voicemail is left, other times it can be nothing at all.

Mobile carrier (or should we say Un-carrier), T-Mobile is looking to ramp up these efforts to help consumers by introducing Scam ID and Scam Block to help protect customers in the robocall fight.  With the Scam ID feature, customers get automatically alerted when an incoming call is likely a scam.  Then if you want to take it a step even further, Scam Block can prevent scam calls from even reaching you at all.

"Every year, three out of four people in the US get at least one scam call - and fraudsters cheat consumers out of more than half a billion dollars per year!" said Neville Ray, Chief Technology Officer with T-Mobile.  "So the T-Mobile team designed a brilliant set of patent-pending technologies - then built them directly into our network, so there's nothing customers have to do.  No hoops to jump through, no app to download.  Like most T-Mobile technologies, it just works."

As for how it "just works," here's the release from the company's site:

...Every time someone calls a T-Mobile customer, as soon as that call reaches the T-Mobile network, patent-pending technology analyzes it – in milliseconds – against an advanced global database of tens of thousands of known scammer numbers. The database is kept up-to-date in near real-time by analyzing every call that comes into the network with behavioral heuristics and intelligent scam pattern detection. When a match is found, the T-Mobile network tags the incoming call and warns the customer that it’s likely from a scammer. Because of the way T-Mobile’s network manages voice traffic, the Un-carrier is capable of analyzing every call to identify and block scammers.

If a customer prefers never to be bothered by scam calls, they can simply turn on Scam Block, and T-Mobile will terminate the call before it ever reaches the customer – stopping the scammers cold.  The customer is always in control and always has the power to decline or block scam calls.

The company will enable these features on a rolling basis starting with T-Mobile ONE customers.  New T-Mobile ONE customers will automatically get Scam ID starting on April 5.  Postpaid customers can enable Scam ID April 5 by dialing #664# and pressing the call button in their phone's dialer.  For turning on Scam Block, customers can dial #662# and then hit dial.  But if you'd rather turn Scam Block off, as there is always that chance the service could block calls you might actually want, hit #632#.

More information on the company's efforts can be found here.  Also, if you currently are not a T-Mobile customer, and wish to learn more, head here for benefits.

Lots of DVDs and Blu-Rays Laying Around?  Digitize Them with Vudu!

Today, Walmart's subscription-free, premium video streaming service, announced today the launch of the first mobile offering for consumers to be able to convert their DVD and Blu-ray collections into digital libraries, right from their smart phones.  Mobile Disc-to-Digital can turn DVDs and Blu-rays into digital movies thanks to a scanning of the movie's barcode via the Vudu app.  These movies can then be watched on numerous Vudu-enabled devices, including televisions, Blu-ray disc players, gaming consoles, streaming players and through the Vudu app on phones and tablets.

"The average movie collector owns nearly 100 DVDs and Blu-rays.  We know these customers have invested a lot into building their physical movie collections," says Jeremy Verba, general manager with Vudu.  "As more and more customers create digital libraries, we are constantly looking for ways to help them unlock additional value from the movies they already own."

The feature works on both iPhones and Android devices and can be utilized for almost 8,000 movies from Lionsgate, Paramount Home Media Distribution, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment.  Look for additional titles to be added in the coming months.

How much will it cost you might ask?  Movie buffs can convert a DVD to SD or a Blu-ray disc to HDX for $2.  If you're looking for a better picture from your DVD collection, expect to pony up $5 per title to convert DVDs to HDX.  The good news is that all Vudu users will receive one complimentary first-time mobile conversion!

Note also that Mobile Disc-to-Digital Conversions must take place at a customer's home/billing address.

So if you're not into March Madness this weekend and want to look at converting some of your old DVDs to digital, here is a great opportunity!

GoFundMe: Clothing For Children with Disabilities

Changing gears a bit with this post, and just wanted to recognize my niece Chelsea, and her current endeavors on GoFundMe, as she is completing her senior thesis project, with the goal to bring to market a line of clothing for children with disabilities, to help both them, and their parents.  Would love it if you could spread the word, as I think this is a wonderful idea, and would love to see this come to fruition.  Feel free to contribute here, and see the full description below:

I'm raising funds for my senior thesis collection! I'm designing a children's wear collection that caters to children with disabilities. Improving the lives of the differently abled has always been my passion and I have spent the past three years developing innovative techniques to apply to modern clothing in order to make the daily task of dressing easier for differently abled children. It is my goal, after graduation to bring adaptive clothing to a mainstream market.  The funds will be going toward purchasing the fabric, notions, shoes, accessories, and compensation for the children and parents who will be lending their time to help my vision come to life.  I will need to start purchasing my materials no later than July.  The support that I have received and continue to receive from my family and friends is what is giving me the strength and motivation to make my dreams come true, and for that I am forever grateful. I will be posting my progress work on various social media outlets throughout this process, so you guys can see what your donations have helped me achieve. Thank you in advance!
Help spread the word!

No. 1 Job Skill in 10 Years Predicted by Mark Cuban

It goes without saying that jobs have become a main focus of our economy and the politics that go along with that.  One issue that has been brought to light recently is that one of the large concerns with jobs in the country won't be the outsourcing of them, but rather the automation of them.  It's already begun to take place in fast food places like Wendy's, but in a recent interview that Dallas Mavericks billionaire owner did with Bloomberg TV, he feels that the U.S. is woefully unprepared.

Computer coding, once thought to be a fail safe occupation, could soon even become in jeopardy.

"That might have been a great job a few years ago, but

you might be out of work in five years," he mentions, claiming that the "automation of automation," where computers might soon learn to write better software than humans can.  "We're going to have a lot of displaced workers - the nature of work is changing," says Cuban.

So what does he predict will become the most in demand job skill to combat these forms of automation?
Creative thinking.

"I personally think there's going to be a greater demand in 10 years for liberal arts majors than there were for programming majors and maybe even engineering," he said.  "When the data is all being spit out for you, options are being spit out for you, you need a different perspective in order to have a different view of the data."

Cuban claims that experts in foreign language or philosophy majors will be of the most value to employers over the next decade.

Interestingly amidst much criticism over the current administration's budget, he goes on to say that America should be more heavily investing in programs like Americorps, which is seen to leverage community building and develop creative thinking for further social impact.

Whether or not Cuban's prediction comes true will remain to be seen of course, but perhaps all of a sudden that degree you thought may not have been quite so handy, could indeed become just the opposite.
